Annotated Grade 9-Style Model Answer: [Paper 1, AQA/Question 2/English Language]
Sometimes seeing a strong model answer is useful. Sometimes, however, the more pressing question is: what exactly is this answer doing that makes it strong?
This resource takes a complete Grade 9-style model response to an original AQA-style exam question and breaks down how and why it works. Rather than simply presenting students with an excellent answer and hoping they absorb its secrets through academic osmosis, the response is annotated and explained so students can see the decisions being made underneath the writing.
The annotations draw attention to skills such as:
building and maintaining a clear argument;
selecting quotations that actually give you something useful to analyse;
moving from identifying a method to exploring its effect;
developing interpretations rather than stopping at the first obvious idea;
analysing individual words and phrases in detail;
using subject terminology accurately and purposefully;
linking ideas together across a paragraph;
exploring alternative or more nuanced interpretations;
explaining effects on the reader without resorting to “this makes the reader want to read on”; and
keeping analysis focused on the question throughout.
Where useful, the commentary also explains why particular choices are effective, what a weaker response might have done instead, and how students could transfer the same skill to a completely different extract or question.
The aim is not to provide a formula that must be memorised word-for-word. It is to make the thinking behind a high-level response visible, so students can understand what “develop this further”, “analyse in more detail” and “be more perceptive” might actually look like on the page.
This download includes:
one entirely original AQA-style practice question;
an original source or extract where the question requires one;
one complete Grade 9-style model answer; and
detailed annotations and explanations showing how the response meets the demands of the question and develops its analysis.
Students can use the resource independently for revision, work through the annotations with a teacher or tutor, compare the model with their own response, or cover the commentary and annotate the answer themselves before checking what they noticed.
Please note that this is an independently created educational resource. It is not an official AQA paper, past-paper answer or endorsed AQA resource, and it does not reproduce an AQA examination paper. “Grade 9-style” describes the level of skill the response is designed to demonstrate; individual marks and grades remain subject to the question, mark scheme and examiner judgement.
